MR. CRAWFORD: About 4 o'clock, I should say, it began to get light. SENATOR SMITH: You were in the boat and pulling? MR. CRAWFORD: Yes, sir; until the time we were picked up. . . . SENATOR SMITH: Where were you when this collision occurred? MR. CRAWFORD: I was right forward in B deck. SENATOR SMITH: Where is that? MR. CRAWFORD: Two decks underneath the boat deck. SENATOR SMITH: Tell what you experienced. MR. CRAWFORD: I was on watch until 12 o'clock, and I was waiting for my relief to come up. I was to be relieved at 12 o'clock. I heard the crash, and I went out on the outer deck and saw the iceberg floating alongside. I went back, and there were a lot of passengers coming out. SENATOR SMITH: You went out on the outer deck? MR. CRAWFORD: Yes, sir. SENATOR SMITH: On Which side? MR. CRAWFORD: On the starboard side. SENATOR SMITH: And saw the iceberg? MR. CRAWFORD: I saw the iceberg going by. SENATOR SMITH: Was there any ice on the deck? MR. CRAWFORD: I did not go so far forward as that, sir. SENATOR SMITH: Was there anybody injured that you know anything about? MR. CRAWFORD: No, sir; I went to all the ladies' cabins. They were all rushing out, and I told them I didn't think there was any immediate danger, and after the order was passed for the life belts, I tied the life belts on the ladies, and an old gentleman by the name of Stewart, and tied his shoes on for him. . . . SENATOR SMITH: Did you see the ship go down? MR. CRAWFORD: We saw her at a distance; yes, sir. SENATOR SMITH: What shape was she in when you saw her last? MR. CRAWFORD: It seemed as if her bow was going down first. SENATOR SMITH: At how much of an angle? MR. CRAWFORD: We saw all the lights going out on the forward part of her. SENATOR SMITH: And still burning on the after part? |

CRAWFORD : J’étais de garde jusqu’à minuit, et j’attendais que ma relève arrive. Je devais être soulagé à minuit. J’ai entendu l’impact, et je suis sorti sur le pont extérieur et j’ai vu l’iceberg flotter sur le côté. J’y suis retourné, et il y avait beaucoup de passagers. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Vous êtes allé sur le pont extérieur? M. CRAWFORD : Oui, monsieur. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : De quel côté? M. CRAWFORD : À tribord. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Et vu l’iceberg? M. CRAWFORD : J’ai vu passer l’iceberg. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Y avait-il de la glace sur le pont? M. CRAWFORD : Je ne suis pas allé aussi loin que cela, monsieur. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Y a-t-il eu des blessés dont vous avez entendu parler? M. CRAWFORD : Non, monsieur; je suis allé dans toutes les cabines pour femmes. Elles se dépêchaient toutes de sortir, et je leur ai dit que je ne pensais pas qu’il y avait un danger immédiat, et après que l’ordre fut passé pour les ceintures de sauvetage, j’ai attaché les ceintures de sauvetage sur les dames, et un vieil homme du nom de Stewart, et attaché ses chaussures pour lui. . . LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Avez-vous vu le navire couler? M. CRAWFORD : Nous l’avons vu de loin; oui, monsieur. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : Dans quelle forme était-il quand vous l’avez vu pour la dernière fois? M. CRAWFORD : On aurait dit que l’avant coulait en premier. LE SÉNATEUR SMITH : À quel point? M. CRAWFORD : Nous avons vu toutes les lumières s’éteindre sur sa partie avant.
